Cuba's Angel Valodia Matos kicked the match referee in the head in his bronze medal bout against Kazakhstan's Arman Chilmanov as Saturday's Olympic men's heavyweight taekwondo tournament descended into chaos.
With the Cuban leading 3-2 in the second period, coaches from both teams ran on to the mat to remonstrate with the match referee after he stopped the fight, apparently in Chilmanov's favour.
Matos had been receiving treatment for a foot injury.
After a heated exchange on the mat, Matos struck the referee in the head with a high kick. He also kicked another official.
Matos was promptly disqualified and escorted from the arena.

A versenyző a kazah Arman Csilmanovval küzdött, amikor 3-2-es vezetésénél ápolást kért. Engedélyt kapott, de a szabályok szerinti egy percnél tovább tartott a kezelés, mire a bíró leléptette.

A dühös Matost először edzőjének még sikerült lefognia, de kiszabadította magát, fellökte a bírót, majd a meccset felügyelő ellenőrhöz rohant, és egy klasszikus taekwondós mozdulattal arcba rúgta. A svéd Chakir Chelbat szája felszakadt, Matost lecsillapították, majd kvázi azonnal örökre eltiltották a sportágtól. "Durván megsértette az olimpia és a taekwondó szellemét" - közölte a nemzetközi szövetség kommünikében.

A guardian.co.uk szerint Matos távozóban még a padlóra köpött, trénere azt nyilatkozta, a felügyelő túl szigorú volt. Matos nem kért bocsánatot tettéért, az esetet a kínai rendőrség is vizsgálja.
